Lamine Yamal Early Life

Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana was born on July 13, 2007,  in Esplugues de Llobregat, a city within the Barcelona metropolitan area in Catalonia, Spain. Coming from a Muslim family, his mother, Sheila Ebana, is a waitress originally from Bata, Equatorial Guinea, while his father, Mounir Nasraoui, is a building painter from Larache, Morocco.

Yamal’s parents separated when he was three, but both continued to be part of his upbringing. The family had been living in Mataró, but after the separation, his mother relocated to Granollers, where Yamal began playing football at the local club La Torreta at the age of four. He split his time between the two cities to be with both parents. While living with his father in Mataró, Yamal was raised in Rocafonda, a neighborhood described by El País as marginalized and overlooked. He celebrates his goals by signaling the number 304, representing the last digits of the local postal code, 08304. His rise to prominence has brought pride and recognition to the working-class community of Rocafonda.

When Yamal was six, Barcelona scouts noticed his talent and invited him to train at La Masia. He officially joined the club in 2014, moving to Barcelona to live and train at the renowned academy

Yamal does not shy away from publicity, still a teenager he was reportedly in a relationship with Alex Padilla. The duo has longed broken up, he also has an ‘ overbearing’ personality — to rival fans atleast. The great example of this was his celebration after his incredible goal against Real Madrid.

Lamine Yamal Club Career

As Yamal progressed through the youth ranks at La Masia, he quickly became regarded as one of the academy’s top talents. For the 2022–23 season, he was promoted to the Juvenil A team, despite being younger than most of his teammates. In September 2022, Xavi invited him to train with the first team alongside other young prospects. Even though he had yet to sign his first professional contract, Yamal stood out as one of the academy players who most impressed the coach.

Yamal made his first-team debut on 29 April 2023, coming on for Gavi in the 83rd minute of a 4–0 win against Real Betis in La Liga. During the match, he registered a shot on target against former Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and became the fifth-youngest player in La Liga history at 15 years, 9 months, and 16 days old. He also became the youngest player to feature for Barcelona’s first team since Armando Sagi in 1922. Yamal won his first title with Barcelona on 14 May 2023 as part of the squad that claimed the 2022–23 La Liga title, though he missed the celebration the following week due to international duty with Spain.

Despite remaining part of the Barcelona Atlètic squad throughout the season, Yamal earned his first start for Barcelona’s senior team on 20 August 2023, in a 2–0 victory over Cádiz at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, receiving a standing ovation as he was substituted with five minutes left. In his next start on 28 August 2023, he was named Man of the Match after contributing to goals by Gavi and Robert Lewandowski in a 4–3 win over Villarreal. His strong performances earned him the inaugural U23 Player of the Month award for August. On 19 September, Yamal made his Champions League debut in a 5–0 win over Royal Antwerp, and on 2 October, he extended his contract with Barcelona until 2026, with a buyout clause of €1 billion. Two days later, he started his first Champions League match against Porto.On 8 October, Yamal scored his first goal for the first team in a 2–2 draw against Granada and later made his first El Clásico appearance as a substitute in a 2–1 loss at home on 28 October. On 4 December 2023, he was awarded the inaugural Golden Boy The Youngest trophy, given to the youngest player nominated for the Golden Boy award, though he missed the ceremony due to school commitments.

At 16, Yamal broke several records for Barcelona during the season, making 50 appearances across all competitions. In La Liga, he became the youngest starter for Barcelona, the youngest player to provide an assist, the youngest to score for both Barcelona and in La Liga, and the youngest player to score a brace in La Liga. He also became the youngest player with more than 10 goal contributions in La Liga at 16 years and 213 days. In the Champions League, he became the second-youngest player to feature in the competition, the youngest player to start a match, and the youngest to play in the knockout stage.

As of December 23, 2024, Lamine Yamal has made significant contributions to FC Barcelona in the 2024-2025 season. In La Liga, he has appeared in 16 matches, scoring 5 goals and providing 9 assists.

Unfortunately, Yamal sustained a grade one injury to the anterior tibiofibular ligament in his right ankle during a match against Leganes on December 17, 2024. This injury is expected to sideline him for three to four weeks, potentially keeping him out for the remainder of 2024.

Prior to his injury, Yamal’s impressive performances had significantly increased his market value, reaching €150 million, a record for a Spanish player.

Lamine Yamal International Career

Lamine Yamal made his senior international debut at 16 years and 50 days for the Spanish National Team. He broke the record for the youngest Spanish player and goal scorer, a record previously held by his club teammate Gavi. 

At just age 16, Yamal bamboozled defenders at the Euro 2024 playing an integral part to his Country’s success at the tournament. His ‘ I am HIM’ moment was during the Semi Final match against France, when he dunked on Rabiot dribbling past him to curl the ball to the top of the net— the goal was voted goal of the tournament. The French midfielder had made disrespectful remarks towards the Spaniard prior to the match.

Other notable performances are the assists against England( in the final), Georgia, Germany and Croatia.

He won the best young player award at Euro 2024.
