Born on January 21, 2003, in Ivry-sur-Seine, France, Hannibal Mejbri grew up in a family that nurtured his passion for football. He spent his formative years in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, where his love for the sport flourished. Encouraged by his family, Hannibal joined local youth academies to hone his skills, quickly standing out.

Hannibal Mejbri’s education was strongly rooted in his footballing development. While traditional academic details about his schooling are not widely publicized, his time at the prestigious INF Clairefontaine Academy was an important part of his formative years in football.

INF Clairefontaine, located in the Île-de-France region, is one of the most renowned football academies in the world, known for producing elite footballers such as Thierry Henry, Kylian Mbappé, and Olivier Giroud. The academy combines rigorous football training with a structured academic curriculum, ensuring that young players grow not only as athletes but also as individuals with a solid educational foundation.

At Clairefontaine, Hannibal developed his technical skills, tactical understanding, and physical conditioning while being exposed to a competitive yet nurturing environment. The academy places significant emphasis on discipline, teamwork, and mental toughness, qualities that Mejbri exhibits in his professional career.

In addition to his time at Clairefontaine, Hannibal continued his education in football-specific environments at clubs like Paris FC and Athletic Club de Boulogne-Billancourt, which are known for balancing athletic and personal development for young players.

Personal Life

Hannibal Mejbri hails from a family deeply rooted in both education and sports, reflecting a blend of intellectual and athletic pursuits. His father Lofti Mejbri is a teacher by profession and a former Tunisian footballer, little wonder where the youngster got his talent.

His mother Radhia Mejbri according to reports is a former physiotherapist. Hannibal didn’t grow up alone, he has an elder brother Abderrahmen Mejbri who is a sporting coach associated with the Vietnam national football team. Hannibal often accompanied Abderrahmen to football matches during his early years, serving as the team’s mascot. This exposure to the football environment from a young age likely nurtured his passion for the sport.

The Mejbri family’s strong educational background, combined with their involvement in sports, provided Hannibal with a balanced upbringing.

Club Career

Hannibal’s football journey began at Paris FC in 2009, where he spent nearly eight years developing his foundational skills. In 2017, he moved to AC Boulogne-Billancourt, further refining his game and attracting the attention of top clubs. A year later, he joined AS Monaco’s youth academy, a stepping stone that showcased his potential to a broader audience. Hannibal also attended the prestigious Clairefontaine academy, known for producing world-class players, which played a pivotal role in his development. His time in Monaco didn’t quite go well with his parents claiming the Ligue 1 side had breached contract agreements. In 2019, Mejbri held the interest of major clubs across Europe, the likes of  Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

On August 11 2019, Manchester United secured Hannibal’s signature for £9.3 million, with the youngster having rejected moves to other English clubs. He made an immediate impact in the club’s youth setup, earning accolades and  progressing to the U-23 squad at the young age of 17. He signed a new contract with Manchester United in March 2021 and on 20 May he won the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award making his senior debut same month in a 2 – 1 win over Wolves in the final game of the Premier League season.

To be able to gain adequate first-team experience, Hannibal Joined Birmingham City on loan on 29 August 2022 for the 2022- 2023 season where he put up an astounding performance before returning to Manchester United. In January 2024 he joined Sevilla on loan until the end of the season, with an optional buy-clause reported to be about €20 million, further broadening his exposure to different playing styles.

In August 2024, Hannibal made a permanent move to Burnley on a four-year contract, marking a new chapter in his career. The transfer, highlighted by a creative announcement video, showcased Burnley’s confidence in his abilities. Since joining, Hannibal has been instrumental in the team’s midfield, consistently delivering standout performances.

International Career

Eligible to represent both France and Tunisia, Hannibal initially played for France’s U16 and U17 teams. However, in 2021, he chose to represent Tunisia at the senior level, a decision rooted in his deep connection to his heritage, committing his international future to his parents’ native nation. Hannibal quickly became a key player for Tunisia, participating in prestigious tournaments such as the FIFA Arab Cup and the World Cup, making his first appearance against Mauritania in the first group match and being named the man of the match in the third group match against the United Arab Emirates and since has been an outstanding player earning him the African revelation of the year at the Africa d’Or awards, in 2021 and 2022.
