Brennan Johnson was born into a family with a strong connection to football. He was born on May 23, 2001 in Nottingham England, to David and Alison Johnson. His father, David had a notable career in the English football league as a professional footballer striking for the likes of Ipswich Town and Nottingham forest. David, originally from Jamaica, represented the Jamaican national team.

Johnson joined Nottingham Academy from Dunkirk when he was eight and made his first-team debut at 18. Johnson scored his first professional goal for Nottingham Forest on August 28 2021. Following the appointment of Steve Cooper, Johnson experienced an incredible upturn of form, scoring one goal and providing two assists in a month which earned him the EFL Young Player of the Month award for September 2021.
He ended the season as the top scorer with 19 goals across all competitions and was named the EFL Championship Player of the Month. He signed a new four-year contract with Nottingham forest in July, 2022 which was set to expire in 2026.
